Peaceful Voting In Barak: 75.97% Turnout In Silchar & 73.37 In Karimagnj

The polling of the second phase of the 2024 Lok Sabha ended today at 5 PM. As we file this report, the hardworking poll personnel from the polling stations are still returning from various nooks and corners of the district to ISBT, Ramnagar to submit the EVMs to be safely kept in the strongroom until the counting date on June 4 after all the seven phases of the election completes. After the completion of the polling, the approximate voter turnout trend for Silchar stands at 75.97% and 73.37% for Karimganj constituencies. In Silchar, the Katigorah assembly recorded the highest, 80.50% voter turnout trend. In Karimganj it is the Karimganj South assembly with 76% turnout.

As per the available date after the completion of the poll, Assam recorded a total of 76.94% voter turnout in the second phase of the general elections. In the first hour of the polling, Silchar was at the bottom among the other constituencies in the state. In the Silchar constituency, the Borkhola assembly recorded 79.90% votes, Dholai received 76.06%, and Katigorah, the highest percentage of 80.50. In the Silchar assembly constituency, the turnout was 72.8%, in Lakhipur it was 74.10%, in Udharbond at 76.10% and in Sonai, the record lowest among the others was 71.81%.

In Karimganj the overall turnout stood at 73.84%. The assembly-wise breakup stood at Algapur-Katlicherra at 75.42%, Hailakandi at 72.45%, Karimganj North at 75.50%, Karimganj South at 76%, Patharkandi at 72% and the newly re-named Ramkrishna Nagar assembly constituency recorded a 70% voter turnout. In Karimganj, Karimganj South and Ramkrishna Nagar assembly constituencies recorded the highest and lowest voter turnout respectively.

There have been calls for a boycott in at least two polling stations in Silchar and a few others at the local level. In 2019, the Silchar constituency recorded a total of 79.51% voter turnout and Karimganj recorded 79.18%. Even though 2019 figures also include the postal ballot, after extrapolating the data from the approximate trend date recorded so far, the voter turnout for both Karimganj and Silchar came down this year.

Please note: the data received for this year’s election are not final as data from some Polling Stations takes time. This data also doesn’t include the postal ballot. A more detailed analysis would be made after the final data is published.
